I received a counterfeit item on Vinted, can I get a refund?

How do I send a Subject Access Request (SAR) to Vinted, and what do I do with what comes back?

Email privacysupport@vinted.co.uk from the address linked to your Vinted account and cite Article 15 of the UK GDPR. The UK data controller is Vinted Platform Limited (5 New Street Square, London EC4A 3TW). Vinted must respond within 30 calendar days at no cost. Explicitly ask for the meaningful logic behind any automated decision under Article 22 UK GDPR, because that is the part Vinted routinely leaves out. The SAR pack typically returns your listings, messages, sales history and profile data but omits any explanation of the moderation decision. If you find the phrase 'This content was detected automatically' next to a flagged item, that is direct written proof of an automated decision without human review, and you can demand a human re-review under Article 22(3), replying to legal@vinted.co.uk. Vinted says consumer protection laws don't apply because I bought from a private seller. Can I still get my money back?

Partly. Sections 9 and 10 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (satisfactory quality, fitness for purpose) do not apply to purely private consumer-to-consumer sales. But the right to reject goods that are not as described DOES apply under Section 13 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979, and Vinted's own copy admits this. On top of that, the Buyer Protection fee is a paid service you buy from Vinted Platform Limited, which is covered by Section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (services performed with reasonable care and skill) - so any refusal to properly investigate is a claim against Vinted directly. The only route is via Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 or referrals.citizensadvice.org.uk. Consumers cannot lodge a Trading Standards case directly. Citizens Advice logs your complaint, gives you a case reference and refers it to the correct Trading Standards office. As of April 2026 the Trading Standards office that handles Vinted has changed, and Trading Standards confirmed to a Sad Vinted Faces user in August 2026 that Citizens Advice is now the only entry point. If your Vinted Subject Access Request has been ignored, redacted or returned without addressing the automated-decision logic or the report sources used against you, include that in your Citizens Advice complaint. Can the Financial Ombudsman help with a Vinted dispute?

The Pro Account Trap is a recurring pattern: users are told they must convert to Pro to keep selling, they register with HMRC as sole traders, and then are banned again by automated moderation for commercial selling on a Pro account. Vinted rarely provides a specific reason. Users with frozen Pro account funds should escalate via card issuer and Citizens Advice.

I've been permanently banned from Vinted. Can I ask to move to a Pro account instead?

You can ask but it usually doesn't work, and if it does it often creates a bigger problem. Vinted's stated policy is that a permanent ban is permanent, and their fraud systems flag known emails, device IDs and payment cards to prevent re-registration. A handful of community members have written to legal@vinted.co.uk asking for the ban to be lifted on condition they convert to Pro and register with HMRC; a very small number have had it work. The Pro Account Trap is real: converting to Pro to escape a ban often just puts you in the next queue for the same ban under the same automated moderation for 'commercial selling'. A better first move for anyone permanently banned is to send a Subject Access Request (see sadvintedfaces.com/faq#q9a) asking for the automated-decision logic under Article 15(1)(h) UK GDPR, and if it comes back marked 'detected automatically' exercise your Article 22(3) right to human review.
